Collection and preservation of geological data and materials

The Geological Survey of Estonia (EGT) collects and manages the materials and information obtained during surveys of the Earth’s crust. Past data are used to conduct and plan new geological surveys, making them valuable in terms of both the economy and environmental protection.

The objective of EGT is to centralise the geological data and material collected in Estonia and to ensure that they are easily and readily available. Organised and updated datasets allow the data from previous studies to be effectively used in the conduction of new studies

Collecting material and data for studying the Earth's crust during fieldwork is a time-consuming and expensive process. It is, therefore, essential to review the existing data and use these datasets as the basis for future research. Fieldwork, research and laboratory analyses are conducted in areas that significantly contribute to the generation of new knowledge and the achievement of set objectives.

High-quality basic data are needed to identify new georesources and create geological models that would assess the potential environmental impacts associated with the use of these resources.

Development of the Public Interface of the AUK Web Application

During the project, the AUK borehole data application, which had previously been intended for internal use only, was enhanced with new functionalities enabling the visual comparison of boreholes and the visualisation of analysis results for a single borehole. In addition, the application was adapted to make it suitable for public use.

The project was funded by the European Union in the amount of EUR 120,000 from the Recovery and Resilience Facility under NextGenerationEU.
