One of the key tasks of the Department of Hydrogeology and Environmental Geology at the Geological Survey of Estonia (EGT) is to investigate groundwater and its quality. The Geological Survey of Estonia provides advice on matters related to groundwater, conducts hydrogeological surveys, and ensures that modern research methods are used in groundwater research in Estonia.
Assessment of the impact of intensive abstraction
As the population density increases, the water quantity needed for domestic uses also increases. The combined effect of climate change and increased groundwater abstraction may significantly impact the status of groundwater resources. There are cases even in Estonia where the scarcity of groundwater resources imposes limitations on local developments.
Assessment of the impacts of mine dewatering
Major mines affect the groundwater regime of surrounding areas and can leave a negative impact on the quality of groundwater as well as groundwater-dependent ecosystems. Data obtained from continuous groundwater monitoring and hydrogeological surveys allow mining activities to be managed in a way that minimises impacts.
Assessment of the status of bodies of groundwater
While the Environment Agency is responsible for the status of bodies of groundwater, the EGT is responsible for the development of methodologies that will contribute to creating conceptual models of groundwater bodies, assessing the relations between groundwater and surface water, and enhancing the management of transboundary groundwater bodies.
