Data digitization and organization

The Geological Survey of Estonia is digitizing and validating data of drill cores obtained during basement exploration from 1937 to 1991. More than 10,000 mineralogical descriptions and 30,000 historical geochemical assay results are being digitized from 540 drill holes

Exploration of critical raw materials

Legacy drill cores from the national drill core archive are being logged using automated core scanner equipped with geochemical, mineralogical and magnetic susceptibility sensors. Using historical data together with fresh analysis, a selection of mineralised intervals will be picked for further geochemical and petrographic studies.

Crystalline basement mapping

Within mapping and geothermal research projects where crystalline basement is intersected, mineralogical and geochemical information is collected from drill core or rock chips to refine the crystalline basement map sheet.

Jõhvi magnetic anomaly studies

In 2019, two deep drill holes were drilled in the largest magnetic anomaly area in Estonia, providing valuable information about iron ore resources. Additionally, several other interesting mineralization occurrences were discovered, including silver and gold mineralization. These findings indicate that Estonia's crystalline basement has the potential for precious metal occurrences similar to those in Central Sweden and Southwest Finland. Further research on the genesis and distribution of precious metals continues.
