The project HiTech AlkCarb was financed by the Horizon 2020 programme, and the British consortium project SoS RARE by NERC ja EPSR, under the Security of Supply of Mineral Resources programme.
The principal focus of these projects were critical raw materials of EU, including rare-earth elements (REE) and several high technological metals, their geological exploration and issues of global supply. As a result of activities financed by the European Union and Great Britain, 3D models of ore bodies and a database were created, REE research methods were developed, and study material targeted to the society and universities was prepared.
Estonian phosphorite, one of the most prospective sources of rare-earth elements in Europe, is so far little known. However, interest on Estonia is increasing, also because one of the few plants producing rare-earth metals in EU is located here.
In the meeting it was noted that the supply base of many high-tech metals is still overpoweringly under the control of China. Within the EU, it is essential to focus on REE exploration and discovery of new deposits. Also, it is important to liven up geological exploration for discovering battery metals and increasing capability for mining and metal production.
Co-operation in exploration of high technological metals is developing between many universities, geological surveys and private enterprises. Recently, also African states have been increasingly involved in co-operation, at least with Great Britain. It is desirable that Estonia will soon have a role in discussions on technological and sustainable development of European states in regard with rare-earth elements, as well as in regard with other high technological metals.
