The International Earth Science Olympiad for school pupils takes place already for the 12th time. This year, the event is occurring at the Mahidoli University in Thailand. Until now, Estonians have not participated in such a contest.
Last year it was agreed in co-operation with the Tartu University to form an Estonian team for the Earth Science Olympiad. The team comprises pupils from Tallinna Reaalkool (Tallinn Secondary School of Science). Preparation of the team has been led by A. Soesoo and S. Hade. Several lecture modules have been carried out, and two-day training took place at the Särghaua Earth Science Centre in May, in co-operation with professors from the Tartu University and Tallinn University of Technology. Final selection of team members took place in early June. Four pupils of the 10th and 11th grades that performed best in the end exam were chosen. The Geological Survey of Estonia supports the participation of the Estonian team in the International Earth Science Olympiad.
