The rector of Tartu University, professor Toomas Asser and the director of the Geological Survey of Estonia, professor Alvar Soesoo signed agreement of co-operation, which defines the fields of co-operation between the university and the survey.
Economical and astute specialization in the field of materials and geological resources is a key issue in moulding Estonia towards a developed high-tech state. Accordingly, the co-operation between the survey and the university provides essential practical benefit for the whole society.
The director of the Geological Survey of Estonia, Alvar Soesoo sees the agreement as being of essential importance in exploring the geological resources in our state and in developing their best fields of use.
This understanding of co-operation provides an essentially better strategical basis for conducting joint research of national importance in a most efficient way. A very relevant part is also joint efforts in developing studies in Earth science in university level. This can be done both through supervision of MSc and PhD theses, as well as through widening the basis of training. It is certain that involving scientists from the Tartu University, both through know-how and workforce supports the accomplishment of the national tasks of the Geological Survey of Estonia in an efficient and knowledge-based way.
