The state of Estonia has lain down the development trends of the Earth’s crust policy, according to which, among others, it is required to maintain the geological information up-to-date and increase it in regard with geological resources of economic potential. Within the framework of the procurement procedure „Core drilling operations for carrying out geological investigation within the exploration areas of Türisalu and Kallavere  formations in Virumaa“ the geological survey is searching for performer of drilling operations for boring altogether 16 boreholes within the mentioned exploration areas.

The objective of the drilling operations is to transect both the deposits of graptolite argillite of the Türisalu Formation and phosphorite of the Kallavere Formation and acquire drill cores of maximum outcome. The quality of existing studies of these deposits and their geochemical dataset are not any more up-to-date, as the related studies have been carried out more than 50 years ago. The level of accuracy of laboratory analyses in those times is not known.

The head of the Department of Geological Resources of the Geological Survey of Estonia, Tiit Kaasik: „We are continuing the national investigations of geological resources, and as a result we shall specify what sort of richness and in which amount is hidden in our crust. The objective of the planned drilling is primarily to control the information produced on the basis of earlier drill holes and further on, reliability of earlier data. In addition, it is planned to perform complementary analyses of the material, i.e. analyses that were earlier not considered necessary or it was not known how to carry out. The majority of rocks of the Türisalu and Kallavere Formations collected during earlier exploration and investigations have been used up for earlier analyses and are of no use for complementary studies. Therefore, we require new high-quality drill core material“.

The deadline for submitting tenders is 12 June 2020. The Geological Survey of Estonia has planned to introduce the detailed drilling plans to all involved local governments before commencing the drilling operations. The operations within the Türisalu and Kallavere exploration area have to be accomplished not later than 15 October 2020.
