The Estonian Geological Archive is a unique digital dataset. The archive, originally founded in 1957, contains the results of geological investigations carried out in Estonia. The oldest reports in the archive originate from the year 1923. The mission of the archive is to store the geological reports collected throughout the years, maintain a database and ensure public use of the data.
All material that formerly existed on paper can be found in the now opened digital geological archive. Old paper files and maps were scanned during the project of digitizing. More than 736 000 pages and 7000 spatial geometries were digitized, and software of the archive was developed.
The head of the EGT Department of Geoinformation, Mariliis Aren: „We have entered a new era with the geological archive. The searching system of public service of the archive allows one to find geological research reports with location information and other accompanying material, and if desired, to download them. The geological archive application is available in Estonian, Russian and English. With limited functionality, it can also be used in smart devices“.
Further on, material will be collected into the archive exclusively in digital form, or compilers of reports can upload their reports in the archive themselves. The procedure of presenting data and instructions for using the archive can be found on the web page of the archive. All compiled reports, conducted investigations and gathered underlying data by experts in geology and enterprises operating in the field are awaited to be submitted in the geological archive.
The Estonian Geological Archive can be viewed at the web page https://fond.egt.ee. All suggestions, desires, and questions are welcome and can be sent to the archive e-mail [email protected].
The project of digitizing the Estonian Geological Archive was financed through EU Regional Development fund means and state support. The total cost of the project was 369 523.80 €. The work was conducted by REGIO OÜ, AS Andmevara, OÜ Andmevara Services, Ratus OÜ and AS Datel. In addition, the TalTech Institute of Geology, and the Information Systems Department of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications participated in implementation of the project.
