A set of geological and geophysical maps of Hiiumaa and accompanying explanatory notes have been prepared. The set includes four main maps (quaternary, bedrock, hydrogeology and groundwater vulnerability maps) and five supplementary maps (maps of bedrock relief, quaternary thickness, geomorphology, gravity anomalies and aeromagnetic anomalies).
One of the objectives in preparing the explanatory notes was to review and decode the geological problems and questions that emerged during the performance of additional fieldwork and digital mapping.
The focus was on separating the Hiiumaa uplift on the basis of the geological and geophysical evidence, the mineral resources of the Kärdla meteorite crater area and their occurrences, assessing the future prospects of the Kaevatsi magnet anomaly and considering the history of petroleum manifestation research in Hiiumaa.
The most important findings have been highlighted in the summary of the explanatory note; however, for more detailed information, the entire explanatory note is available in the Geological Archive. The data and maps are available to download on the website and we have also created an interactive map of the area.
