Construction of a new drill core storage was finished at the Arbavere research centre in the end of December 2018. Opening of the new repository is planned to take place in April.
Geological Survey of Estonia started to modernize the Arbavere drill core research centre in 2018. The goal is to improve conditions for performing pure and applied investigation on Estonian bedrock. Thus, the reliability of geological studies is guaranteed both at domestic as well as at international level.
The first storerooms for drill cores were built in Arbavere at the 1970s. During this period, up to 40 km of rock cores were drilled yearly. This material provided the basis for geological mapping of the Estonian subsurface, as well as for exploration of geological resources and groundwater reserves. All high-quality drill cores are preserved for further basic and applied research. Re-use of stored drill cores lowers considerably the costs of planned geological investigations when fulfilling new geological tasks.
Construction of new storages is planned to be continued in Arbavere this year. Also, the deposited drill cores will be reviewed. The existing repository has not only room for storing drill cores, but also for describing them, primary treatment of rocks and sampling. The equipment for rock preparation has been obtained within the framework of the Environmental Investment Centre project nr. 14975 “Equipment for rock preparation at the Arbavere drill core repository”.
