The annual meeting of GIS specialists of the Nordic geological surveys took place on 29–31 October 2019 in Espoo, Finland. The first meeting day was dedicated to 3D modelling. The two following days were focused on various topics in GIS, databases and other IT-related issues. Representatives of the Finnish, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Dutch geological surveys participated in the event. The Geological Survey of Estonia was represented by Eveli Sisas and Katrin Kalla.
3D modelling is a rapidly developing field with high potential. Demand on 3D modelling when dealing with a variety of topics is constantly increasing. Geological surveys of Nordic countries have used it for showing locations of mineral reserves or fractures, and modelling of groundwater flow, to mention a few examples. Ground movement data gathered in a region of high-relief terrain are used for fixing locations of possible landslides or collapses and for modelling of such events.
Questions about collection, management and use of data were discussed in a meeting on databases. For being able to work upon constantly increasing amount of data, the most optimal solutions have to be found from a large variety of different technological options. This would better support performing analyses and data visualisation.
Group work was carried out on each day of the meeting. The discussed topics were varying; for instance, proceeding of various international projects (INSPIRE, GEOERA, EuroGeoSurvey, etc.), building of data models, migration of databases, possibilities for becoming meetings, and future visions.
