The spring conference “Exploration of mineral resources and prospects of mining” took place on 16–17 May 2019. Its aim was to present international standards of mineral resource exploration, which should be applied in the studies on Estonian future geological resources (phosphorite, metal-rich rocks, etc.). Presentations on these issues were given by experts from Germany and Norway, as well as by leading geologists from the geological surveys of Finland and Sweden.
The geologists of the Geological Survey of Estonia presented a study on the security of supply of construction minerals in the Harju County, and on planned investigations of phosphorite and metallic mineral resources. Utilization of by-products of oil shale mining in large infrastructure projects and mining of construction minerals in a wider sense were also discussed.
A debate on the topic “Investigations of future mineral resources and prospects of mining in Estonia” took place at the end of the first day. Its participants were representatives of the Geological Survey, the Estonian Mining Society, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications, Tartu University and entrepreneurs.
It is a pleasure to note that there was a great interest on the conference organized in co-operation with the Estonian Mining Society, and all the speakers were well-received. Also, a large amount of public chose to follow the conference through the internet.
